House Passes Life Jacket Rule 1 Year, 9 Months ago
QUOTE:
CONCORD, N.H. -- Children ages 12 and younger would have to wear a life jacket when they ride on a boat outside an enclosed cabin under a bill approved Tuesday by the New Hampshire House.

Currently, children age 5 and under must wear protection. Boats with a 3-foot-high enclosed side rail would be exempt.

Opponents argued that the requirement was intrusive because no children in the age range had drowned in boating-related accidents in the past eight years.

It should be amended to include the over 50 age group- for their protection.

This should also be expanded to encompass children at beaches across the state, or anyone within 50 feet of water over 12 inches deep, as well as children swimming in private swimming pools, especially those on lounge floaters.

Remember, this is for OUR PROTECTION.

Seriously though, I think Keith has proved a point. How many laws are we going to make???? Are we all so stupid we don't know how to take care of ourselves?

The National Transportation Safety Board issued a Boating Safety Alert. This was one of their items they recommended states implement. NH has implemented the boating education, #2 on their list. And I wouldn't mind their 3rd one, but I bet that would cause some concern.

Funny the NTSB doesn't recommend a Speed Limit... LOL!

I have no problem with a #3 boating license requirement. The only state in the Union that currently has that requirement is Alabama.

Most sailors wear PFDs: they recognize what can happen even at speeds below 20.

Yours is a 16-foot Hobie?

Some serious boating is done when you get two hulls flying:

Couldn't you have gotten rid of it in parts? Just one Hobie rudder is $100!

I'm getting off Winnipesaukee, so I've got two "Hobies" to sell—but not in parts.

Well, maybe in parts—if someone buys enough parts!

One's 20', another a fully-optioned-out Hobie Formula 18—complete.

And a near-new galvanized catamaran trailer. Package deal, anyone?

To many rules!!
now if a kid is not wearing a jacket he has to be afriad of the authoriities instead of looking at them as help.
What happened to lie free or die.
For evry new law they pass, I think they should be required to delete an old one.

This is almost social control by inconvenient laws. What 12 year old will want to be on a boat all day, uncomfortable, and not get a tan?

Hold on, I have to take off my life jacket so I can go for a swim.

Now THAT looks stressfull. I don't think tri's were meant to stay in that position for long.

Yes, Hobie 16. When in I'm in practice & in a moderate steady breeze I can sail on one hull for several minutes without touching down. Good fun.

"The authorities" can take many minutes to come to your aid.

From Gilford, it's a twenty-minute trip—IF the individual officer knows the Wolfeboro area. I've been with the dispatcher on the telephone relaying directions to an officer whose boat I can see—and they still can't find their way around Wolfeboro.

Fine—for when cows outnumbered people.

Agreed. Some states have "sunset laws" A law has an expiration date. It gets reconsidered at the expiration date, and allowed to drop off the books if no longer needed. On another note:

If Jimmy Carter had a 2nd term, this is how we'd be wake-boarding today!

The photo is a bit dark, but to the left you can see a stay attached to the outer hull of three hulls.

This is a trimaran which, like catamarans, are very capable sailboats. (My little Tornado catamaran would pull a skier.)

Yes indeed it is for our protection! [inserts goofy laugh] 'Schnorkel!... Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck'

Legislating common sense cause we're too stupid to figure things out. <Sarcasm OFF>
