WB Inn 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
|
Just wondering if anyone has eaten at the tavern since they got a new chef (May?). If so, has it improved significantly? (I was going to say "any," but that would set the bar pretty low).
We're always looking for something here in the price range of Johnson's, but haven't found it.
Thanks,
Mac

We too had a bad experience in September. We had a gift certificate from our kids laying on the hutch and on a Friday night we decided to go. We went to the Tavern and were ushered into the back room, even though there were seats open up front. There we were, in this big empty room at a little table. The bread basket had two cold rolls in it and the salad bar was worse than most Denny's I have eaten in, not much to choose from and little of it. Menu said they had an apple/fennel salad advertised but when I asked for it, I was told we don't have that. And this was on a Friday night in supposed early fall tourist season. Food, the actual entree was good, but the young waitress seemed bored and did little to ensure things went well. We didn't even have a bread plate for our cold roll. And of course the tab ate up our $50 certificate and then some. Would rather have the fish and chips at Johnson's!

Thanks for responding, Tis and Ol C. I guess we'll keep passing on it.

We went in July and the food was inedible. Where I live in Los Angeles our health department has a restaurant rating system. Every restaurant has an "environmental health rating" It's a letter grade system - and of course, life is too short to eat at anything less than an A. I would suspect that Wolfe's Tavern would get a C at best.

The Inn used to bathe in the glow of a 5 Diamond rated resort . . . but that was years ago.
I think they are trying but good change just isn't coming fast enough.

Where we lived some years ago, the county health department posted (and still does) the results of the last 2 restaurant inspections. It's an easy thing to look a place up and see if any violations are listed. Definitely eye-opening. And not what you'd necessarily think - a Subway located in a gas station convenience store has had no violations for 2 years, while some big name places were listed for things like pest control (ewww) and storing foods at the proper temperature.
Now, I know that these inspections can be overly picky and not perhaps representative of the overall approach of a place, but with a few hundred places to choose from, it's easy to go to the ones without any issues.
That was, btw, started by the local newspaper, as a single feature story, and then became a regular access on the county website. So, it could be done here, should a newspaper wish to.

Some years ago it was done here. The Granite State News ran it with a list of licensees which was surpirsingly large (number of licensees not violations). Then they had the violations listed. I can't remember what the catalyst was for the articles. I think it was a restaurant that was shut until health violations were corrected, maybe it was "Rumors" then again maybe not.
Chefs were interviewed then and some of the issues in their mind were minor like issues with walk-ins and temperature of food. One breakfast buffet (long since closed) was hit hard. It was probalby almost 20 years ago that the articles ran.
The State Public Health does inspections but does not post the data on the web site. The inspection reports of child care facilities is listed.

"The price range of Johnson's"? Would that include the price of just getting there?
I have friends that drag me to the Wolfeboro Inn every summer: except for removing their formerly-excellent 'burger choices, I haven't seen much change. (From OK).
The Lakeview Inn has tasty entrées under $9— if you can resist their many appetizers. (Closed Monday and Tuesday).
Why not stay local, rather than adding the cost of transportation to the check?

Ah, I must not have been clear, CW. I'm not a regular of Johnson's - only been there twice. I was using their prices as a descriptor of the type of thing that would be more affordable.
I would never have thought the Lakeview had good food, based on the guest rooms. Just shows how important it is to get recommendations.

I found the Lakeview Inn to have fabulous food and AWFUL rooms. But $9 doesn't buy you anything much at the LI.
This thread was about the Wolfeboro Inn - wasn't it?

I have been going to the Inn for the last few years and really enjoyed it. This summer they changed the menu, and it was a problem. After boycotting for the summer I returned this fall to see a return to the old menu Thank Goodnes

Wolfeboro Inn - big thumbs down.
I know someone who could help them fix it though.

Have you tried the Pine Cone Pub in Melvin Village?

We ate at The Tavern this past weekend. It was good. Not great, not poor, nothing special, but nothing disappointing.
Our waitress was outstanding.
Overall, I'd say we'll go back, but we don't rave about the place.

I found the Pub in MV to be quite expensive and nothing special.
